More InfoWhat are Frontpage Server Extensions?
FrontPage Server Extensions is a term, which refers to the files, programs and specific way a Website is managed if it is using FrontPage. Microsoft FrontPage has some unique features, such as the ability to easily create hover buttons and search forms for your Website. This is possible only when the FrontPage Server Extensions are installed, because the features of FrontPage, such as hover buttons etc., work in conjunction with the programs installed on our servers to make those features work. Without the Server Extensions (programs), your FrontPage site will not function properly. Thus, the Server Extensions truly "extend" the functions of the server by enabling all the great tools that are part of Microsoft FrontPage. We are currently using Frontpage 2003 extensions, which is backwards compatible with previous versions of Frontpage..

More InfoWhat is SSL?
SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. It is an emerging standard developed by Netscape Communications to transfer information securely across the Internet. SSL will enable your customer's browser to connect to your web site and transparently negotiate a secure communication channel. Once this connection has been made, information, like credit card numbers, can be exchanged securely.
Please note that SSL does not include software to process credit card transactions. Although you can securely receive credit card information through SSL, actual processing of the credit card will require a "Merchant Account" from an accredited financial institution.

More InfoWhats the difference between the shared certificate and a personal one?
A shared certificate acts exactly the same as a personal one does, and for a lot of people it is more than enough to just use a shared server certificate. However, some people striving for a professional image would want the customer to know that they're site, individually, has been approved for trading on the net.

More InfoHow do I access the shared certificate ?
To access your site through our shared certificate, you can access https://www.perfecthost.com.au/~username (make sure you use the ~)

More InfoWhy are my secure pages loading slower?
SSL pages are slower because of the overhead needed to encrypt and decrypt the data. The web server must spend extra time encrypting the data before it is transmitted to your computer. Likewise, your computer must then decrypt the information. The same applies when you securely submit information from your computer to the Web server. All this requires your CPU and the Web server's CPU to work harder and therefore might cause pages to load more slowly.

More InfoWhy do I get a warning that some items are insecure?
For a server to serve a page securely all items, including graphics, must be accessed using the https:// protocol. If you are receiving a message stating some items are insecure then you have at least one item that will be served unsecurely. To find out which items are not secure, let the browser ignore the unsecure items and you will be able to see where most of the items are.

More InfoWhat is a domain name?
A domain name is a unique name for a location on the Internet.
Domain names exist to enable users to find web sites on the Internet without having to remember 12 digit numbers. The domain name you type into your browser - www.perfecthost.com.au, for example - is merely the "human" representation of its Internet address [also known as it's "IP Address"] of 202.60.66.59

The process of converting the domain name - www.perfecthost.com.au - into its equivalent IP address - 202.60.66.59 - is undertaken by the "DNS". The DNS [Domain Name System] is a global listing of Internet domain names and their IP addresses. When you type an address into your browser your PC first goes to the DNS system to obtain the IP address for that site. Once it has the IP address the browser then connects to the web site.

More InfoWhat does "delegating" a domain name mean?

This is the process of making your name "visible" on the Internet. A name that has been purchased is not automatically "on" the Internet - it's just no longer available for purchase to other people.

The process of delegating a domain involves telling the system where to look for that domain by nominating DNS servers and their IP addresses. Note that the DNS servers must have been modified to account for the domain being delegated before you update the domains' record to point to those DNS servers.

More InfoWhich characters are allowed in the names?

Domain names are always lowercase, and can include numbers and dashes [as in the "-" symbol] The name cannot begin or end in this symbol.

More InfoWhat is the maximum length of the domain name?
A domain name can have a maximum of 63 characters, excluding the three letter extension, i.e., the .com, .net or .org . Please note that whilst is has recently become technically possible to have domains that are longer than this, we do not offer registration services for any such names at this point.

The reasons for this is that, as they are non-standard in format it is anticipated that those names will have extensive problems and, as a result, reduced/impaired functionality.

More InfoWhat are the different types of domains?
There are two basic types of domains - those that are linked to individual countries and those that are international in nature. International domains, also referred to as Generic Top Level Domains [gTLDs], include the .com, .net and .org. They are not associated with any country.

Country-based domains, technically known by the name of Country Code Top Level Domains [ccTLDs], are controlled by each countries NIC and, for this reason, do not have a standard set of requirements for applicants. These domains are recognisable by their two letter extension on the far right of the domain name - i.e., the .au in perfecthost.com.au

More InfoI already own a domain and am now ready to start a web site. How do I do this?
To order a hosting account, please go to the order page. Be sure to use "Use My Existing Domain" on the web hosting order form. If you purchased your domain elsewhere, you will need to contact the company from whom you purchased your domain and change your Domain Name Server details.

More InfoWhat is a "domain transfer"?
A domain transfer is where you transfer your domain from your current registrar (who you registered your Domain with) to PerfectHost. To transfer your domain to PerfectHost, just head to our domains page. There you will see links to Transfer your Australian or International domains to PerfectHost. PLEASE NOTE : It is not absolutely necessary to transfer your domain to PerfectHost. You will only need to modify your Name Server details with your current registrar to the name server details above to take advantage of our hosting services..

.au domain transfers
All .com.au domain transfers are free, unless they are within 90 days of expiry. You will then be asked to pay a renewal fee, which will add an extra 2 years onto the registration of your .au domain. PLEASE NOTE : It is not absolutely necessary to transfer your domain to PerfectHost. You will only need to modify your Name Server details with your current registrar to the name server details above to take advantage of our hosting services.

.com/.net/.org/.biz/.info domain transfers
Currently these are not free to transfer to PerfectHost. You will be asked to pay for one years domain registration to transfer one of these domains to PerfectHost. This will add additional year to your current registration period. PLEASE NOTE : It is not absolutely necessary to transfer your domain to PerfectHost. You will only need to modify your Name Server details with your current registrar to the name server details above to take advantage of our hosting services.

More InfoHow much does it cost to register a domain name?
Please visit our domains page for our latest domain pricing.

More InfoHow can PerfectHost offer domains at these prices?
PerfectHost is founded on the premise that cheaper prices are in the interests of all Internet users - except, perhaps, those organisations that, until now, have enjoyed a monopoly in the domain name market.

Like any business, our pricing is a function of the price we pay, the market price of our product and our overheads; we have structured our business in such a way as to minimise our overheads and our buy price. The outcome of this is our pricing structure.

More InfoWhat kind of domain names can you host?
Any! We can host most local or international domain name that are available, as long as you own it.

More InfoOnce a domain is registered, who is the legal owner of the domain?
The person or Company who is the Registrant contact is the legal owner of the domain. Unfortunately there are a minority of unscrupolous domain registrars out in the marketplace who register the domain in their name, making them the owner of the domain even if you have paid for the domain. This can cause problems down the track when you are trying to make changes to your domain records. When you register your domains through PerfectHost, we ensure you are registered as the legal owner of the domain. Regardless of which domain registrar you choose to go with, ensure that the domain registrar you choose to go with registers the domain in your name.

More InfoHow do I get information about domain names that are already registered?
Information on all registered domains is available to the public via what is known as the "WhoIs" database. This database exists to enable people to determine who owns any given domain, and how to contact them.
To look up a domain's record in the WhoIs database, go here, type the name of the domain you're curious about into the box [leave out the www. and any http:// references] and click "Search". The database will respond with the complete listing for that domain, including email contact information where available.

Note that there are different WhoIs databases for each country; the link above connects to the international WhoIs database only. If you wish to search on a country-based domain [ie., webcentral.com.au] then you need to search in the relevant countries WhoIs database - in the above example, the Australian WhoIs database.

These country-based databases are maintained by the NIC of the country in question; in Australia the NIC is the AusRegistry. For a complete listing of all NICs globally, click here.

More InfoWhat do I need in order to purchase a domain name?
To register an international domain you need to provide contact information [Name, address, etc] for the individual or body purchasing the domain, and credit card details for payment of the same.
There is no need to provide any technical information at time of application; we do NOT require DNS server information, IP addresses or the like. PerfectHost handle this for you as part of our default registration process.

Once the registration is complete you may, at any time, update your DNS records via the "Manage Domain" option on the PerfectHost web site.

More InfoHow long does a registration last?
Registrations can be arranged for periods from one to 10 years. After the nominated period the owner of the name will be notified of the imminent expiration of the domain and invoiced to renew the registration.
If at that time the invoice is not paid then the registration will lapse and the name be returned to the pool of available names; if it is paid then the registration is renewed.

More InfoHow long does the registration process take?
Domains registered via PerfectHost are entered into the DNS system very rapidly - typically in the order of an hour, although this depends on load, internet speed and, to a lesser extent, other factors.
